- W174448406 abstract "Applied music instruction ought to produce fine musicians who can play not only technically but also musically. However, rather than teaching music comprehensively, current applied music instruction often focuses exclusively on teaching techniques, leading to students with limited musicianship. This study attempts to demonstrate a feasible vehicle for supplementing current applied music instruction with historical and theoretical studies related to the music that students are currently playing. The vehicle used to provide this historical and theoretical backgrounds of the music is computer technology.The purpose of the study was to develop and formatively evaluate a module of supplementary computer-assisted historical and theoretical instruction, consisting of three session plans. For the development of the session plan, the researcher investigated currently available music instructional programs and selected three programs. Three intermediate violin students from the Bloomingdale House of Music School were selected to experiment during the computer sessions. The researcher observed the students' self-exploratory sessions and individually interviewed them after each session. A case study approach was used to qualitatively describe each participating student's cognitive outcomes and his/her affective responses to the computer sessions. The violin teachers of the participating students were also interviewed in order to examine their affective responses to the supplementary computer-assisted historical and theoretical instruction.The findings of this study revealed that the participating students seemed to gain knowledge of the music they played, through the programs and were able to make connections between the given historical and theoretical instruction and the music. Furthermore, the computer sessions also seemed to motivate them to study knowledge of music, which was often neglected in their lesson. Students' teachers also showed positive responses to computer-assisted historical and theoretical instruction, although they expressed fear about their own lack of computer training and equipment. This study suggests that with the use of appropriate and related software, computer-assisted instruction can offer an incredible potential to improve student motivation and achievement in learning knowledge of music." @default.
