- W1745492593 abstract "Language alteration secondary to a cerebral lesion (aphasia) has been considered as the principal determinant of the quality of life of the individual. At present, the need to evaluate and treat patients with aphasia after a cerebrovascular accident has been recognized. The informal clinical evaluation can be completed with standard tests. Assessment of the functional capacity of communication is acquiring greater importance. Knowledge of the prognostic factors can help the physicians to determine the evolutive course of aphasia and to offer an individual expectation for recovery. Regarding treatment, its objectives, action standards for the persons close to the patient and orientation in specific techniques of rehabilitation need to be established. Three differentiated approaches to treatment have been considered: a) strategies based on syndromes; b) using compensatory strategies that are based more on functional incapacity than on syndromes; and c) methods of alternative and augmentative communication. The investigation should enter into the study of the efficacy and clear indication of the different techniques of treatment. The role of pharmacotherapy in the treatment of aphasia is still uncertain." @default.
