The present study aimed to evaluate the possibility to monitor the acquisition of passive immunity in lambs with voluntary ingestion of colostrum by determining serum total protein (TP) by refractometry. They were used 17 Santa Ines lambs divided into two groups. In 10 newborn lambs (Experimental Group - EG) were assessed at birth and after 6 hours: weight, packed cell volume (PCV), serum total protein by refractometry and spectrophotometry, and the fractions of albumin and globulin by spectrophotometry. Except for the evaluation of the weight, the same parameters were evaluated in 7 newborn lambs with 72 hours (Reference Group - RG) who had remained since birth with mothers and voluntary intake of colostrum ad libitum. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics by determining the measure of central tendency and their dispersions, the means were compared by T test, settling for some variables, the Pearson correlation coefficient. By the method of refractometry, there were obtained average values for serum total protein of 4.0 (± 0.1) g/dL after birth, 5.3 (± 0.3) g/dL six hours after birth and 6.2 (± 0.5) at 72 hours. It has been shown that six hours after birth the lambs can be identified with different absorption capacity of the immunoglobulins, because there is a marked increase in globulin concentration during this time and positive correlation (r = 0.7345 to 0.7584, p < 0.05) between this protein and the serum total protein measured by refractometry. Therefore, it becomes possible early detection of needy animals and adoption of strategies for increasing passive immunity in lambs." @default.
