They argue that a more subjective and multi-scalar analysis of migrant experiences will emerge in the coming years, and more research will be conducted on the links between migration and diversity. The literature on migrants and migration, both local and international, is vast, making it a subject difficult to review. This fact requires us to make it clear from the outset that our paper does not offer an exhaustive review of migration in South Africa. Instead, we outline the role of gender in migration studies internationally and offer an overview of migration studies in South Africa.
