- W1750890699 abstract "The magnetic interactions in La{0.70}Ca{0.30}Mn{1-x}Cr{x}O{3} (x=0.15, 0.50 and 0.70) are investigated by means of x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), high-resolution x-ray powder diffraction, and bulk magnetization measurements. XAS in the Mn and Cr L{2,3} edges confirm single valent Cr{3+} and mixed-valent Mn{3+}-Mn{4+} ions, while the O K edge XAS spectrum indicates local maxima in the O 2p density of states close to the Fermi level due to mixing with Mn and Cr 3d states. The energy separation between Mn and Cr eg spin up levels is ~2 eV, which is significantly larger than the corresponding band widths, ~1 eV. A robust antiferromagnetic state is found for x=0.70 with TN=258 K. For x=0.15, combined XMCD and bulk magnetization measurements indicate a fully polarized ferrimagnetic state for the Mn and Cr spins below Tc=224 K. For x=0.50, a ferrimagnetic component dominated by Mn spins is also shown to be present below Tc=154 K, presumably coexisting with an antiferromagnetic component dominated by Cr spins. The temperature dependencies of the Mn and Cr net moments, normalized at 10 K, are identical for x=0.15 and distinct for x=0.50, indicating varying coupling between Cr and Mn spins with x for the ferrimagnetic component. No evidence of lattice anomalies due to cooperative charge and orbital orderings was found by x-ray diffraction for any of the investigated samples. Our results demonstrate that double exchange between Cr{3+} and Mn{3+} spins is not a relevant interaction and the evolution of magnetic ground states of Cr substituted manganites is mostly determined by a competition of ferromagnetic double exchange between Mn{3+} and Mn{4+} spins and antiferromagnetic Cr{3+}-Cr{3+}, Cr{3+}-Mn{3+}, and Cr{3+}-Mn{4+} superexchange interactions." @default.
