- W1752089606 abstract "It is proposed that a particular configuration of Michelson interferometerscan test a particular physical interpretation of noncommutative geometry withPlanckian precision. In the proposed holographic interpretation, the transverseposition of a body, measured by comparing interactions with null fieldspropagating in different directions, displays a new kind of uncertainty thatresembles random errors of a Planckian clock. It is argued that in a Michelsoninterferometer the uncertainty is observable as directionally coherentholographic in phase. The effect is not due to quantization of themetric, or any kind of dispersive effect: the spacetime metric remains flat, and the measured speed of light in any one direction remains the same at allenergies. The new uncertainty is analyzed from the point of view ofnoncommuting position operators, and by using a simple wave theory based on theevolution of Moyal deformation of two-dimensional wavefunctions. In theeffective wave theory, wavenumber eigenmodes in each direction define a groupvelocity in transverse directions, so a position measurement leads to a new, spatially coherent Planckian uncertainty in transverse rest frame velocity.Predicted phase correlations are estimated and compared with the sensitivitiesof current and planned interferometer experiments. It is shown that nearlyco-located Michelson interferometers of modest scale, cross-correlated at highfrequency (comparable to the inverse light travel time), should be able to testthe Planckian noise prediction with current technology." @default.
