W175234083 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter presents a comparison of light treatment with drug treatment in winter depression. It is easier to perform a true double blind treatment study with drugs, although marked side effects of a drug sometimes can make the blindness illusory in at least some patients. Therefore, besides being of interest in their own right because of drugs being an alternative to light treatment, drug treatment studies in winter depression can possibly contribute to an elucidation of placebo responsiveness in persons suffering from seasonal affective disorder. As a result of the particularly marked placebo effect in younger patients, the effect of moclobemide and placebo was compared separately for patients below and above the median age of 45 years. No difference was found below 45 years, whereas the difference was barely significant in patients above 45 years. As to placebo response on light treatment, the lack of age effect would seem to argue against the improvement being a pure placebo effect—at least in patients of middle or higher age." @default.
