Luckily for the self-regard of the successful, those masses have always seemed to be arriving in a steady stream from elsewhere, so that suffering and op pression have appeared merely to be their road to a better life. The constant residue of poverty, under the peculiar American circumstan ces, has easily been explained away as a mass of personal failures, merely incidental to the steady rise of the capable and ambitious. Occasionally, a particular group seems to persist in un-American poverty, whereupon the popular culture labels it as lazy, and academics, in more refined language, look for the cultural pe culiarities inhibiting its success. The pressure on the poor and on cultural minorities to accept these definitions is great: the American melting-pot culture is efficient in deracinating and proletarianizing those who come within its range." @default.
