• W175304 abstract "The aim of this study was to describe how mothers of children born SGA experience the initial period of breastfeeding after discharge from hospital, as well as contact, support and required assistance from the child health when it came to breastfeeding. The study design was descriptive, with a qualitative approach and a purposive sampling was used. The study group consisted of eight mothers of children born small for gestational age in the same hospital in central Sweden. Data analysis was done with content analysis, where finally the theme A difficult and emotional timewas formed from the categories Emotionality with Feeling of inadequacy when breastfeeding does not work from the start, Importance of having a good child health nurse and Frustration of not getting the proper or sufficient adequate support. The results showed that the mothers thought it was hard to breastfeed the first time even though they appreciated the closeness to the baby. Mothers experienced it stressfull with the babys low weight. Several mothers had to give both replacement formula and breastfeed which was experienced as difficult and they lacked support from the child health nurse. Grief and guilt experienced by mothers who for verious of resons could not fully breastfeed. No mother felt they had received the required support regarding breastfeeding and they lacked knowledge and practical advice from the children health care which was experienced with frustration. Conclusion: The mothers in this stydy has experienced the first passage of breastfeeding as emotional, difficult and with a feeling of inadequacy when breastfeeding did not work from the start.
