Critical Studies in Russian Literature. London: Bristol Classical Press, 1995. vi, l lO pp. Bibliography. Index. 6.95, paper. Three Sisters by Gordon McVay, Uncle Vania and The Wood Demon by Donald Rayfield and Tolstoy's Childhood by Gareth Williams all belong to Critical Studies in Russian Literature series edited by Neil Cornwell and published by Bristol Classical Press. The genesis of these books within a series is of more than incidental interest for series format inevitably influences form and content of each study and to an extent determines relative merits and weaknesses of each as well. As to form, series descriptions on back of each book indicates that examination of artistic works under consideration will be divided into two parts: one section covers writing and reception while another offers a commentary. Regarding contents, each study fulfills mandate of series to provide a useful guide for undergraduate teaching or study of relevant artistic work. Gordon McVay's Three Sisters is longest of three studies under review. McVay sets himself task of analyzing Chekhov's richest and greatest with goal of sorting through bewildering variety of interpretations Three Sisters has inspired since its premiere in 1901. McVay early states his desire to discern the dramatist's and thereby indicates critical emphasis to be applied in his study. McVay is not concerned with offering a personalized interpretive reading of Three Sisters but rather with providing as much information as possible concerning thematic issues advanced in Three Sisters and their relation to dramatist's intention. Accordingly, bulk of McVay's book-all of Part One-consists of a delineation of plot of Three Sisters, a portrayal of characters and an outline of such themes as love, work, happiness, Moscow, time-past and present, philosophising and future, religion and meaning, comedy, typicality and 'Russianness', and universality. McVay's method of coordinating discussion of putative intentions with above themes is to document dramatist's perception of issues raised in his play through reference to his letters. The editor and translator of a 1994 collection of letters, Chekhov: A Life in Letters, McVay is visibly familiar with Chekhov man as revealed through his letters. While illuminating, McVay's extensive use of correspondence often seems a replacement for other sources and forms of analysis. Thus, McVay's study contains little external confirmation of Three Sisters' indebtedness and connectedness to its cultural environment other than that explicitly indicated in play or in correspondence. This, too, could well be an indication of book's adherence to scope and goals of series; 304 footnotes in 127 pages of text and lengthy bibliography certainly indicate McVay's awareness of previous scholarly treatment of relevant issues. Part Two of Three Sisters is devoted to an account of work's reception both as a cultural document subject to literary criticism and as a play intended for stage. McVay's discussion of treatment of Three Sisters in critical literature by both English and Russian authors resists synthesis or interpretive assessment and functions more as a form of annotated bibliography. While observing that there is no uniquely 'correct' way to stage (p. …" @default.
