- W1756451790 abstract "This chapter provides an introduction to stimulated Rayleigh-wing scattering (SRWS). Rayleigh-wing scattering is essentially present in molecular media. It is due to the tendency of anisotropic molecules to become aligned along the electric field vector, in the presence of intermolecular collisions. SRWS is classically excited in a bulk material with a laser displaying a nearly Gaussian transverse intensity structure. The presence of SRWS can be detected in two main ways—either by the analysis of the spectrum of the transmitted light in which exciting and scattered SRWS beams are superposed or by the study of backward SRWS (BSRWS). Extraction of information concerning SRWS from forward spectral measurements is difficult, mainly due to the modifications undergone by the laser line during its travel through the nonlinear medium that produces SRWS. This medium displays refractive index nonlinearity simultaneously with its ability to create SRWS. This is the source of a phase modulation (PM) particularly active in the picosecond range of excitation. Thus, spectral broadenings due to PM and SRWS are superposed in the transmitted light and bring difficulties in interpretation." @default.
