- W176186441 abstract "Schildt 's debut in 1912 with the novella collection Victorious Eros {Den segrande Eros) was hailed as a welcome event on the Finno-Swedish literary scene. Indeed, young and promising prose writers were rare within this lyric-dominated literature. In Sweden August Strindberg and, more recently, Hjalmar Soderberg had brilliantly cultivated prose in their detailed, albeit frequently bitterly critical, descriptions of the Swedish society, Stockholm in particular. When Schildt and the other prose writers of the so-called dagdrivare (loafers) generation entered the Parnassus, both critics and reading public wishfully predicted the birth of a Finno-Swedish Strindberg or a Soderberg who would delineate with equal gusto the unique Finno-Swedish life experience in contemporary Finland.1 Certainly, the dagdrivare authors, Schildt first and foremost, created a refined and elegant prose. It soon became apparent, however, that this was not enough to satisfy the critics, who focused their criticism on the small format and demanded broad panoramic novels instead of the fragments of a novel or novellas that they received. Schildt, keenly aware of the demand, repeatedly endeavored to meet the challenge but never succeeded. Although later critics have compared the best of Schildt's novellas to those of such masters of the genre as Chekhov and Maupassant, his contemporaries, and most importantly Schildt himself, came to regard the genre specialization as a sign of artistic weakness. In a perceptive presentation (1973) of the Finno-Swedish literature between the two world wars, Johannes Salminen, a Finnish literary commentator, deplores how little this literature has to tell about that Finland which just recently had gained its independence.2 In fact, Salminen echoes a persistent critical theme. Already at the turn of the century critics had readily admitted that the Finno-Swedish author with supreme ease and proven success explored his own inner self but sadly neglected the description of his outer social reality. This despite the country's turbulent, and yet inspiring, social, political, and linguistic" @default.
