- W1762958229 abstract "Textbooks in how to do research in education commonly contain sec tions pertaining to the essential traits of research workers, but seldom are the traits listed in such sections more than expressions of opinions or com pilations of opinions. It is altogether probable that some of the opinions thus expressed approximate the truth very closely, but still they are opinions. Their writers can not prove them to be true. The most scholarly textbook in educational research introduces its treatment of traits of researchers say ing: More definite information concerning the qualifications and char acteristics of scholars, scientists, research workers, and leaders is of interest to those training for such fields of activity and to those who supervise the instructional and investigational programs involved.1 It is the purpose of the present report to present the findings of an effort which claims to be somewhat better than a compilation of opinions. This effort is based on the assumption that the traits found most fre quently among 250 world-renowned research workers in a variety of fields of scholarship are the ones which are conducive to success in research, if not prerequisite to it. Among the researchers whose traits were analyzed were Euclid, Pythagoras, Blaise Pascal, Johannes Kepler, Rene Descartes, and Albert Einstein in mathematics; Aristotle, John James Audubon, Louis Agassiz, Marie Curie, Nicolaus Copernicus, Arthur H. Compton, Charles Darwin, Galileo Galilei, Benjamin Franklin, Michael Faraday, Asa Gray," @default.
