- W176315809 abstract "criticism, frequently referred to in the pejorative as the Joyce Industry, continues to flourish in the 1970s, enhanced in part by the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the book publication of Ulysses in 1972.1 The occasion was marked appropriately by a page of feature articles in the New York Times, and a number of allusions to Molly or Leopold Bloom, often humorous, were made in the popular press in the United States and Ireland, including reference to the quiet maniacs who devote their lives to the study of Joyce's works. Serious attention was, however, given to this milestone by several scholarly journals de? voted special issues to commemorate the occasion.2 Perhaps one can rejoice in the fact has become a standard author even though critics are frequently set up as standard jokes. This relatively quiet acceptance of the fiftieth anniversary of Ulysses perhaps lulls us into forgetting the furor and storms over the publication of the book. Perhaps, too, a literary celebration such as this is good for literary criticism, for it reminds us Ulysses provoked a sensitive and significant response from some of the most creative critical minds of the modern period, such as Pound, Eliot, and Edmund Wilson. It was in part through their critical response to Joyce's work many of us began to realize the full impact of modern literature and how to approach it in formal critical terms. The work itself, of course, achieved far more. Janet Flanner in a recent article in the New Yorker (3 June 1974) has aptly described the mark Ulysses has made on modern literature: that masterpiece of verbal shock and emo? tional repletion which slowly turned into what it immutably remains today: a literary classic and the guidebook marking the new territory of the twentieth-century English-language novel." @default.
