- W1764759008 abstract "The soil, the interface between earth, air, and water, which hosts most of the biosphere, can be thought of as a medium providing society with various benefits or services. Life on earth would be impossible without the soil and all the things that it performs for the humanity. Soil is considered as a nonrenewable source, and despite the many threats it faces (erosion, organic matter decline, biodiversity loss, salinization, sodification, sealing, compaction, landslides, contamination, desertification), soil is still the poor relevant of water and air, not receiving so far the appropriate caution by policy makers and citizens. This chapter describes soil functions and quality characteristics, as well as the main soil threats and their impacts worldwide. Measures taken and political decisions made so far for soil protection are discussed, while the role of the communities is specifically highlighted. A case study on how to build a strategy for soil protection at local scale is provided based on findings of two funded projects related to soil protection against agricultural wastes disposal." @default.
