A major disadvantage of tagging biomolecules externally is that it requires chemical modification, and additional incubation and washing steps. These modification steps are cumbersome and can potentially perturb the native functionality of the biomolecules. In this chapter, we discuss how aluminum nanostructures can potentially be employed in the ultraviolet region in various plasmon-controlled fluorescence applications to enhance the intrinsic emission of biomolecules and increase biomolecule detectability, thereby negating the need for tagging biomolecules externally thus overcoming the problems associated with it." @default.
