- W177218465 abstract "Publisher SummaryThis chapter discusses the metabolism of nucleic acid. The outstanding property of the nucleic acids is their ability to reproduce themselves indefinitely in favorable circumstances. This is shown by the deoxyribonucleic acid of the nucleus, which, starting from the fertilized ovum, reproduces itself in every cell of the adult body. Similarly, the cytoplasmic ribonucleic acid reproduces itself in every dividing cell and also carries the power of synthesizing the specific proteins that characterize the individual tissues and constitute the enormous equipment of enzymes required for life. Growing tissues rapidly synthesize purines and pyrimidine in accordance with their requirements for intracellular nucleic acids. Tracer studies, using compounds labeled with radio-active carbon, 14C, and chromatographic analysis, have disclosed the stages in each process. Dietary nucleic acids or their components do not contribute any important nutrients to the higher animal, whose nuclear requirements are met entirely by synthesis. Unabsorbed purines and pyrimidine are broken down by the bacteria of the large intestine, some of which require adenine or uracil as growth-factors. Absorbed purines are degraded mostly to uric acid and allantoin and excreted in the urine, along with similar end-products of endogenous nucleic acid metabolism." @default.
