- W177670449 abstract "After spending Christmas at the home of Logan Wilson, a new American friend of Gerth from Harvard days, the newly wedded couple headed for Detroit with the Wilsons. The thirty-third Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Society was being held on December 28–30, 1938, at the Book-Cadillac Hotel in Detroit. Gerth was invited to attend the meeting on Social Theory as a discussant in the Division on Social Theory chaired by Louis Wirth on the last day. The other discussant was N. S. Timasheff of Harvard University, and they were to discuss two theory papers submitted by Edward A. Shils of the University of Chicago and Talcott Parsons of Harvard University. One should not underestimate the significance of this opportunity for Gerth. Barely a little over a year — one year and one week to be exact — since his arrival as a refugee, he was given two chances to appear on the national stage of American sociology. It was unheard of good luck for a late immigrant from the Nazi Germany, since so many of the late-comers were still struggling to get a footing in academia at all." @default.
