- W1778113321 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter provides an overview of the ancient deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) studies. Ancient DNA is recovered using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This is a key technique in molecular genetics that permits the analysis of any short sequence of DNA without having to clone it. PCR is used to reproduce or amplify selected sections of DNA. The study of ancient DNA from Quaternary beetle remains is focused either on Late Holocene fossils, or on specimens preserved either in permanently frozen sediments, or in extremely arid conditions. Molecular genetic studies of fossil assemblages have the potential to test the widely held assumption that most beetle species have remained intact for hundreds of thousands of years. The DNA studies of recent material are described by emphasizing on the tiger beetle DNA, Japanese damaster DNA, and Canary Islands Hegeter DNA. DNA studies of modern- or historical-era insects have paved the way for aDNA studies in recent years. The fossil specimens from rodent middens and permafrost environments have the greatest potential to yield aDNA." @default.
