- W177917532 abstract "Explanations are judgments about why events occur. Much psychological work on explanation comes from Attribution Theory, a collection of theories and research on how people make judgments about others and themselves. This article summarizes work on explanation, beginning with Heider, the founder of the scientific study of explanation. It discusses three perspectives, specifically the views that people are: (a) intuitive scientists who form explanations in a logical manner; (b) cognitive misers who avoid cognitive effort, and (c) story understanders who rely heavily on common sense to make judgments. Bias in judgment is also addressed, with a focus on two well-known biases. The correspondence bias is the tendency to infer that a person's behavior reflects a similar disposition, even when the behavior was constrained by the person's immediate situation. The self-serving bias is the tendency to take more credit for one's successes than one's failures. The process of explanation is also discussed. Current models suggest that explanations are drawn through several stages that differ in their degree of automaticity. Cultural differences are also discussed briefly, as are the consequences of explanations. Explanations for successes and failures can have important implications for mental health." @default.
