- W178121617 abstract "Abscisic acid is known to play a crucial role in seed development and germination as well as in the responses of plants to environmental stress conditions (Zeevaart and Creelman, 1988). In recent years, many ABA/stress-induced proteins and their genes have been isolated and characterized (Skriver and Mundy, 1990). However, little is known about the potential function of these ABA/stress induced proteins. We have previously isolated a cDNA clone (pHv Al) representing an ABA-induced protein in barley aleurone layers. The deduced amino acid sequence of Hv Al protein contains nine repeats each with an 11-amino acid consensus sequence of T-E-A-A-K-Q-K-A-A-E-T (Hong et al. 1988). Computer modelling of this protein indicates that it most likely contains amphipathic a-helical structures with most of the hydrophobic amino acids lined on one side and most of the hydrophilic acids lined on the other side of the a-helix (Dure et al. 1989). Proteins similar to Hv Al have been found in several other plants and these proteins have been named late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins. As part of our effort to elucidate the potential function of the Hv Al protein, we have systematically analyzed the expression pattern of this protein in various organs of barley plants at different developmental stages. We have determined the level of Hv Al expression at both the transcript (Northern blot analysis) and protein (Western blot analysis) levels." @default.
