- W178453937 abstract "Bringing together the practicalities of making ends meet with the spirit of service. I'ts not about you, the opening line of the worldwide bestseller, Purpose Driven Life, by Rick Warren (2002), is a provocative statement that instantly commands attention. Warren then sets out to help the spiritual seeker reframe and refocus an answer to the question, on earth am I here for? Today another reframing of purpose is under way. Longer life and current economic uncertainties are raising a question for many people in their 50s, 60s, and 70s that is both spiritual and secular: How on earth can the second half of my life have meaning, impact, and continued income? One answer to this three-part question is the (Freedman, 2007), a new form of work that brings together the practicalities of making ends meet with the spirit of service for people in their post-midlife years. In fact, nearly 50 percent of people ages 44 to 70 not already engaged in encore careers place a high priority (an 8, 9, or 10 on a scale of 1 through 10) on moving toward this kind of engagement (Peter D. Hart Research Associates, 2008). This should be good news for the social sector, which is tackling urgent community issues and is deeply dependent on talented and committed workers to be effective. Yet, as Casner-Lotto (2007) puts it, while growth in the nonprofit sectors is outpacing growth in the rest of the economy, talent shortages are already affecting critical service sectors, including healthcare and social services. What will bridge this divide between supply and demand? Fortunately, a growing number of established institutions and grassroots organizers are already hard at work putting in place a whole set of social innovations, including pathways, practices, and policies, that can help individuals get from inspiration to engagement in encore careers. These institutions and organizers are meeting individuals halfway and expect the rewards to be worth the effort. Encore Communities In communities across the country, a wide and diverse set of efforts are under way to establish a new outlook toward aging, work, and service. Leaders are helping to connect individuals with local organizations focused on solving important community problems. These exemplars are an early snapshot of the future. good news for other communities is that each operates in a spirit of shared learning. Most efforts are in very early stages of planning and experimentation. But signs are clear that innovation, rather than variations on existing service-model themes, is called for. Such innovation is the focus of the Rose Community Foundation's charge to bring new resources and tap existing ones through Boom- ers Leading Change. This metro Denver initia- tive started with a map of existing resources, but quickly moved to award innovation grants for new and creative approaches to engage boomers. Some projects have created physical and virtual places where boomers can get information and resources or make employment and volunteer service more appealing, flexible, and meaningful. Other projects engage boomers as healthcare workers and volunteers or assist boomers in seeking new career paths. New community tools have emerged, including a guide for nonprofit leaders on engaging baby boomers to help build organizational capacity (Fixier, Eichberg, and Lorenz, 2008) and The Colorado Experience Bank, a Webbased tool that connects older adults to paid and unpaid jobs and to learning opportunities. A leadership group in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is crossing organizational boundaries to design innovative ways to tap the experience of older adults in paid and unpaid roles that address issues related to homelessness. effort is part of a larger project, !Encore, that connects several initiatives of the Grand Rapids Community Foundation, including support for a local Experience Corps project and training for nonprofit organizations that will help them effectively engage boomers. …" @default.
