- W178529629 abstract "Definition of the problem: The limited repertoire of drugs and the use of outdated substances create a disadvantage for pregnant women in the need of treatment. On the other hand research on pregnant women leads to ethical problems. Arguments: 1) Only few study designs actually imply ethical problems: randomised clinical trials testing new drugs and trials without benefit for the participating woman. 2) The classification of pregnant women as a vulnerable group requires further discussion. 3) Responsibility and competency regarding decisions concerning the fetus need clarification. Conclusion: 1) The benefit of valid data derived from drug trials could help avoid therapeutical and psychosocial problems during pregnancy. 2) Being pregnant is not constitutive of vulnerability, however, circumstantial vulnerability exists. 3) There are reasonable arguments for considering the woman as an autonomous decision-maker over issues concerning the fetus during pregnancy." @default.
