- W1785361684 abstract "This chapter discusses the recent developments in permanent magnet focusing assemblies for image intensifiers and camera tubes. There are two principal reasons for using magnetically focused intensifiers or camera tubes rather than electrostatically focused systems: the resolution performance of the former is typically better by a factor of two and, for use in the far ultraviolet where fiber optic windows are unavailable, it is necessary to utilize a device with a plane photocathode. This chapter describes three separate permanent magnet focusing assemblies (PMFA) development studies funded by NASA or ESA for Space Telescope and other applications. The studies were carried out by Princeton University, by Ball Brothers Research Corporation, and by Technische Physische Dienst. It demonstrates that PMFAs are now attractive alternatives to electromagnetic focusing coils, and indeed, they permit the use of magnetically focused tubes in situations where this was previously impossible." @default.
