- W1786352034 abstract "Publisher Summary An understanding of the factors and mechanisms determining the virulence of pathogenic organisms, the nature of the toxins and antigens that they produce, and the nature of the immune response are increasingly dependent on developments in the field of protein chemistry. The usefulness of quantitative immunochemical methods as an aid in solving problems in protein chemistry is also recognized. This chapter reviews certain proteins elaborated by pathogenic bacteria and focuses on some of the problems and solutions that can increase the knowledge of the chemistry of proteins as well as of infectious disease processes. It discusses spontaneous conversion on the standing of bacterial toxins to toxoids, without loss in antigenicity. Toxicity is considered a sensitive and convenient method for detecting a change that is analogous to the one brought about by formaldehyde and other chemical agents and is common to many native proteins of nonbacterial origin. Isolation in a pure state and the chemical characterization of the various proteins, toxins, and enzymes elaborated by pathogenic microorganisms is generally considered the first step toward understanding the mechanism of their action." @default.
