- W178666105 abstract "The purpose of this study was to determine which factors most influence choice. Secondary purposes were to determine the degree to which choices corresponded to timbre preferences and to investigate the timbre preferences and subsequent choices of students who selected their instruments based on the sound. Fourth-grade beginning instrumental students (N = 226) rated and and of the instrument as factors most influencing choice. Instrument choices did not correspond to demonstrated timbre preference as measured by the Instrument Timbre Preference Test: 19% chose the for which they demonstrated a timbre preference, whereas 43% demonstrated a timbre preference for a different instrument. The body of research literature examining factors that influence students' music choices consists of very few studies conducted over a period of several decades. However, despite the paucity of research over an extended period of time, the studies reveal general agreement among researchers regarding the factors that influence students' choices of band instruments. The factors fall into one of two categories: (1) the influence of individuals on students, or (2) characteristics of the such as size, timbre, and perceived ease of playing. According to the research literature, students reported that significant individuals influenced their choices including (a) friends (Bayley, 2000; Delzell &. Leppla, 1992; Fortney, Boyle, & DeCarbo, 1993; Katzenmoyer, 2003; LeBlanc, 1982); (b) relatives (Fortney, Boyle, & DeCarbo, 1993; Katzenmoyer, 2003; LeBlanc, 1982); (c) teachers (Fortney, Boyle, & DeCarbo, 1993; Katzenmoyer, 2003; LeBlanc, 1982); and (d) media figures (Fortney, Boyle, & DeCarbo, 1993; Katzenmoyer, 2003; LeBlanc, 1982). In addition to significant individuals, students also reported that physical characteristics of the instruments including the size and the sound of the instruments influenced their choices (Gordon, 1984; Delzell & Leppla, 1992; Fortney, Boyle, & DeCarbo, 1993; Katzenmoyer, 2003). The research also indicates that students reported choosing band instruments based on their perceptions of the attributes of the instruments, characterizing them as fun and easy to play (Delzell & Leppla, 1992; Fortney, Boyle, & DeCarbo, 1993). While some researchers have agreed upon the factors that influence students' choices, a review of the literature reveals a lack of consensus regarding the extent to which these variables influence students' choices. In his discussion concerning the influence of significant individuals on band selection, Bayley (2000) maintained that friends are most influential in determining a student's choice. Delzell and Leppla (1992) disagreed, reporting that only 8.7% of the 526 fourth-grade instrumentalists in their study identified friends as an important factor on their choices. Similarly, Fortney, Boyle, and DeCarbo (1993) reported that a low percentage (14%) of 990 middle school band students identified friends as strongly influencing their choices of instruments. However, Fortney et al. reported that family members were more important than friends in the selection process, with 21% of respondents indicating that relatives were very influential on their choices of instruments. Surpassing both friends and relatives was the reported influence of instrumental music teachers: 31% of students identified elementary and middle school instrumental music teachers as influential figures (Fortney, Boyle, & DeCarbo, 1993). LeBlanc (1982) purported that the media (radio and television) are largely responsible for influencing students' choices, yet Fortney, Boyle, and DeCarbo (1993) found that only 15% of students indicated that the media influenced them a great deal. In cases in which the media were a significant factor in shaping preferences, male students, more than female, were affected by the media's image. …" @default.
