- W1787279982 abstract "Custody X Change www.custodyxchange.com Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner Geelong Family Relationship Centre anthea.dacy@centacaremelbourne.org.au At the Geelong Family Relationship Centre (FRC) we were searching for a printable calendar to assist with clients who would benefit from having a visual, rather than verbal, representation of time spent with their children. We stumbled upon Custody X Change (software originally developed for family lawyers in the USA. It has more recently been adapted and become available for separated parents to use to streamline their communications and arrangements around their children. I reviewed the Australian version, http://www.custodyxchange. com/australia/parenting-plan.php) As an aid to respectful but separated parenting, it has much to offer. At the Geelong FRC we trialled it with some of our clients to see if we could smooth out any difficulties encountered in Family Dispute Resolution. The software can produce two outcomes for parents: firstly, they can walk away with a 12-month calendar to hang on the fridge showing where the kids are, when, with whom, and for how long. The basis of the calendar part of the program is that most parents agree on a routine which is subject to one-off variations or agreements around events like Christmas and Easter. The visual amenity of this feature is immediately obvious. Holidays, special events, and public holidays may be displayed and flagged if those days cause arrangements for children to vary from their usual routine. For one-off holidays users can create date-specific blocks of time which display with captions on the calendar, or for those seeking flexibility, they may simply note in the agreed parenting provisions that the parents may take a week's holiday during the year at an unspecified date. The second outcome is a parenting plan which allows parents to agree on time spent, major decisions, and any other stipulations they want included. The latest updates to the software allow individual parents to track the progress of the Parenting Agreement throughout the year. By using the software like a journal, parents can tract aspects of their agreement. At any time, exact time spent may be displayed in a variety of time units or as a percentage of the year. These calculations may be shared with the Child Support Agency. It has been interesting trying to adapt this software to our work at the Family Relationship Centre. Our aim is to reduce conflict by improving communication. Generally, the higher the conflict the tighter the wording of any agreement needs to be. FRCs attempt to assist clients reach agreement without resort to an adversarial model. Very detailed and structured Agreements often have the unfortunate effect of polarising parents and in our experience agreements based on hard-won battles often produce poor outcomes for children. [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] The Parenting Provisions are generated with automatic text accompanying the calendar. This text can be overridden with language generated by the user which is a good thing because we found the automated text to be heavy going indeed. For example, a) The routine for Father's right of visitation with the children ... begins with Mother having the children with her from Monday of Week 1 until Sunday of Week 2 having the children with her as Week 2 wraps around and Week 1 begins. Thereafter, the cycle starts over and repeats every two weeks. There are some parents who will love this detailed text. …" @default.
