- W179186871 abstract "The capacity of roundabouts to reduce accidents is not the same at all sites. At the medium to higher volume intersections with an average of more than one accident per year the installation of roundabouts has resulted in a reduction of accidents of 41 per cent and a reduction of injury accidents of 66 per cent. At low volume intersections, or where there is a major imbalance of traffic flows and less than an average of one accident per year there is no probability of a reduction in accidents and a possibility of an increase in accidents if a roundabout were to be installed. The paper supports the conclusion of previous papers that roundabouts are a tried and tested means of controlling traffic and reducing accidents at busy intersections. The challenge is thrown out to use roundabouts more at busier intersections and semi-rural intersections rather than at low to medium volume intersections in purely urban areas. The suggestion, based on the information presented in this paper, is that the rewards may be far greater." @default.
