• W1794616811 abstract "Despite the fact that Japanese-Chinese political and economic relations have a long history, they have seldom experienced an era without political tensions. One of the unsettled diplomatic issues between the two countries is the territorial dispute over the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands. This conflict exists since the end of the 1960s and is said to be one of the most complicated territorial disputes in the world today. Which historical and legal justifications do Japan and China employ to support their claims of sovereignty over the islands? Do economic motives play a role in this context? Would the islands have a strategic value during a militarized conflict? This paper critically analyses the most common historical and legal justifications brought forward by the two countries. These arguments are based on different historical sources and treaties, which will be examined in regard to their limitations for sovereignty claims over the Senkaku/ Diaoyu Islands.
