- W179615060 abstract "Previous foliar mineral analysis has shown that at high elevation sites in the Fichtelgebirge (700–1000 m a.s.l.), those Picea abies (L.) Karst. with yellow tips and even necrosis of older needles exhibit very low Mg, Low Ca and Zn, and rather high S concentrations (Zech and Popp 1983). Several authors have reported similar results from other forest areas of Central Europe (Bosch et al. 1983; Zöttl and Mies 1983; Hüttl 1985; Van Praag and Weissen 1986; Nebe et al. 1987). Another widespread decline phenomenon is the loss of needles, which mainly develops in older spruce at lower elevations in the Fichtelgebirge. Mineral nutrition studies have found that K but not Mg is often insufficient in trees showing needle loss (Zech et al. 1983; Zech et al. 1985; Hüttl 1985; Zöttl and Hüttl 1986; Mengel et al. 1987). Potassium deficiency symptoms, however, have not been observed in the Fichtelgebirge. Other hypotheses to account for needle loss have included water stress (Ulrich 1981), fungal attack (Rehfuess and Rodenkirchen 1984) and frost damage (Rehfuess and Bosch 1986; Friedlanda et al. 1984), all of which may be influenced by the K nutrition of trees. In addition, Klein (1981) has shown that the resistance of K-deficient P. abies to SO2 is reduced, which may be a factor in causing the forest decline in the SO2-polluted Fichtelgebirge." @default.
