- W1796158097 abstract "Today people no longer go to the movies, they go and see a particular film. This change in film attendance has implications for the available sources of information which influence potential moviegoers in their selection of films. Three information sources were identified: film advertising campaigns, friends who have seen the film, and reviews in the daily press. Newspaper reviews seemed to be important information sources. The point discussed is whether these reviews are reliable indicators of potential film attendance. Are film reviews in newspapers mere reports on what is showing at a specific time, with some detail on the theme and the entertainment value of the film, or do they give a sufficient evaluation of the film in order to assist the potential viewers in their film choice? In order to establish the level of film reviews in newspapers and their influence on readers, 100 interviews were conducted with cinemagoers at a Johannesburg theatre. It was established that only 20% of the respondents received their information from reviews; a very small percentage of these readers were actually influenced by the reviews to go and see a specific film; and more than half of the people interviewed considered the film reviews in the daily press to be of a low standard." @default.
