- W1796311925 abstract "To determine the impact of malaria infection in pregnancy on placental volume. Malaria infection in pregnancy is associated with lower birthweight at delivery. It is not known whether this is placentally mediated or due to the associated maternal illness. As part of an ultrasound study assessing fetal growth longitudinally in women at high risk of malaria, placental volumes were measured using 3D ultrasound between 14 and 22 weeks of gestational age. Gestational age was established by fetal CRL at 9–13 + 6 weeks. Placental volume was calculated using the Virtual Organ Computer-aided AnaLysis (VOCAL, GE Medical Systems, Zipf, Austria) system by an independent observer who was blinded to the malaria status of each woman. A z-score of placental volume was calculated, and z-scores of placentas from women who had an episode of malaria were compared to those who had pregnancies without malaria. Placental volumes were successfully measured in 96 women. Nineteen women had malaria (14 P.vivax and 5 P.falciparum) between the CRL dating scan and the placental volume scan. The placentas from women infected with P.falciparum malaria were significantly smaller than from those without malaria, with all placental volumes were successfully measured in 96 women. Nineteen women had malaria (14 P.vivax and 5 P.falciparum) between the CRL dating scan and the placental volume scan. The placentas from women infected with P.falciparum malaria were significantly smaller than from those without malaria, with all placentas being below the median for normal pregnancies. No significant difference was found for those with P.vivax. as being below the median for normal pregnancies. No significant difference was found for those with P. vivax. In this preliminary study we have shown that P.falciparum infection is related to smaller placental volumes, and this suggests that fetal growth restriction in this condition may be placentally mediated. Larger studies and studies in different malaria endemic areas are needed to confirm these findings." @default.
