- W179645545 abstract "mark twain visited Venice in 1 867, he was not impressed by the monuments and sites that had elicited an endless stream of flattering adjectives from European writers. The canals were dismal ditches/' the gondola crusty old canoe/' and Saint Mark's Cathedral a vast and warty bug taking meditative walk/' Since Twain's deflating barrage, the impressions of visitors have followed uniform pattern. They find it necessary first to say that the decaying city is not all that it is reputed to be: sometimes the canals smell, often the streets are downright dingy, and, besides, the Titians and Tintorettos quickly become repetitious. But once the record has been set straight about these matters, almost everyone admits, at first grudgingly and then with increasing enthusiasm, that Venice, despite everything, has vitality that elevates the simplest act of everyday life to the level of adventure. In an old city, especially one like Venice that has been fortuitously left so intact, the traveler can escape the industrialized world of Europe or America and feel that he is participating in life that could have taken place several centuries ago. As he leaves his car in parking garage on the outskirts of the city and walks the narrow streets, he might occasionally wonder why the place he comes from is so humdrum, but he can easily explain away his present experience as something that belongs irretrievably to the past. Besides, this is vacation. Everyday life is supposed to be more subdued. So, for most people leaving Venice is like waking from dream. Being there was pleasant interlude, but it did not have much to do with life in the twentieth century." @default.
