- W179672518 abstract "Recently, multi-layer complex plasma structures were studied in an external magnetic ield [1]. In these experiments, some spherical micrometer sized paramagnetic particles attracted each other and formed elongated structures - grain chains, oriented vertically, parallel to the ield lines of the external magnetic ield. To explain these features, short-range dipole interactions between magnetized grains have to be invoked [2]. Which of the forces (electrostatic or magnetic) prevail, is determined not only by the parameters of the dust particles, but is dependent on the discharge plasma conditions and magnitudes of the sheath electric and magnetic ields as well. Here, we discuss binary interactions between magnetized and polarized grains, as a prerequisite for particle agglomeration, and consider formation of elongated structures. Assume that there is a balance between the main bulk forces acting on dust grains, e.g. the gravitation is balanced by either the electric force due to the sheath electric ield, Mg = QE0, or the magnetic force, associated with a vertical gradient of the external magnetic ield, Mg =am B0/ z. Here M, Q and m are the mass, charge and magnetic dipole moment of the grain, respectively, and z denotes the vertical coordinate. To investigate mutual interactions between the particles, we need to take into account long-range forces, as well as short-range forces. The long-range forces in a dusty plasma are electrostatic, FQ =( Q 1 Q 2/d 2 ) exp(ad/ D), where D is the plasma Debye length. The situation is dieren t if we consider the short-range dipole interactions. Indeed, a spherical particle with magnetic permeability µ, immersed into a magnetic ield B0, obtains the magnetic moment [3], m = a 3 (µa1)B0/(µ+2), where a is the grain radius. First, consider interaction of two magnetized particles at a relatively large separation ( d>a ). The dipole moments m1 and m2 are both parallel to the external magnetic ield, Fig. 1(a). The force component along d is then given by [4] fm = 3m 2" @default.
