The small isolated community of Maunaloa is not really isolated when viewed in terms of the material goods present in the community. Maunaloa is connected to most of the economic world through a complex set of trade and distribution networks. Raw materials are produced in one area, transformed and manufactured in another, shipped to large dispersal centers, which then ship the goods to the store at Maunaloa. Goods are sold and dispersed throughout the community, used, and finally discarded at the local refuse site. This connection with the economic world is a one-way proposition— goods are being imported into Maunaloa, but no goods are being systematically exported out of the community." @default.
