- W179707941 abstract "By integrating morphometrical and endocrinological data, as well as biological effects of various peptides synthesized by the primate follicle, this chapter proposes a dynamic view of the follicle growth within the human ovary. Folliculogenesis starts with the entry of nongrowing follicles into the growth phase, a process that results from a balance between inhibitory and activating factors. Early follicle growth is a long process because several months are required for a new growing follicle to reach the preantral stage (0.15 mm), then 70 additional days are needed to reach the size of 2 mm. Early growing follicle growth is regulated by subtle interactions between gonadotropins and local factors. From the time they enter the selectable stage during the late luteal phase, follicles become sensitive to cyclic changes of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in terms of granulosa cell proliferation but not in terms of steroidogenesis because they do not synthesize estrogens. During the early follicular phase the selected follicle grows quickly and aromatase is expressed in its granulosa cells as indicated by the presence of estradiol in the follicular fluid. However, the total steroid production remains moderate. From the midfollicular phase, the preovulatory follicle synthesizes high quantities of estradiol; then after the midcycle gonadotropin surge, it synthesizes large amounts of progesterone. Thus as the follicle develops, its responsiveness to gonadotropins progressively increases. In vitro studies suggest that the progressive acquisition of follicular cell responsiveness to gonadotropins is under the control of local factors that act in an autocrine/paracrine fashion within the follicle." @default.
