- W179730492 abstract "Over the past several years, there has been an extraordinarily rapid growth in our knowledge of free radical chemistry and its possible involvement in both normal essential biology and age related diseases and dysfunction. Oxidative stress, induced by oxygen radicals, is believed to be a primary factor in various degenerative diseases of the central nervous system, as well as in the normal process of ageing. Antioxidant activity is essential for life to counter act the strongly oxidizing environment in which we live. Many biological functions, such as protection from mutagenesis, carcinogenesis, and ageing, among others, are due to antioxidative effects. Antioxidants are compounds that inhibit or delay the oxidation of other molecules by inhibiting the initiation or propagation of oxidizing chain reactions. The antioxidant activity of several plant materials has recently been described. Attention is being focused on the protective biochemical functions of naturally occurring antioxidants in the cells of the organisms containing them, and on the mechanism of their action. Natural antioxidants (NAO) constitute a broad range of compounds including phenolic compounds, nitrogen compounds, Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), Vitamin E (tocopherols), flavonoids, phenolic acids, carotenoids, etc. are proposed for a long time as biological antioxidants. The main role of NAO is to help the body protect itself against damage caused by reactive oxygen species and degenerative diseases. Although food industries have used effective synthetic antioxidants, the NAO are preferred to synthetic antioxidants on the basis of the assumption that natural compounds are safe. In the search for sources of NAO, some medicinal plants have recently been extensively studied for their antioxidant activity and radical scavenging activity by many investigators. Many methods are employed for the determination of the antioxidant activity – 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method, β-carotene-linoleate model system, ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) assay, electrochemical antioxidant activity tester (EAAT), generation of thiyl/sulfur free radicals, in vitro generation of sulphuroxide radicals, thiobarbituric acid (TBA) test, etc." @default.
