- W180707069 abstract "At Calliachar Burn, 4 km from Aberfeldy, Scotland, 14 steeply dipping quartz-sulphide +/- gold veins infill master joints that crosscut gently dipping metasediments and metabasics in the Pitlochry Schist Formation of the Upper Dalradian. Associated wallrock alteration consists of extreme bleaching with the development of sericite, chlorite and carbonate enrichment. Gold grades vary with mineralogy between the veins, ranging from high-grade quartz-galena-pyrite +/- base-metal sulphides +/- electrum to low-grade galena-chalcopyrite +/- base-metal sulphides. Coarse-grained pyrite enclosing primary pyrrhotite +/- chalcopyrite +/- cubanite +/- mackinawite and later chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite inclusions is the main phase, accompanied by lesser amounts of zoned arsenopyrite. Pyrite is intergrown with, and replaced by, chalcopyrite and sphalerite, but mainly by galena, itself carrying small tetrahedrite-group mineral, hessite (Ag2Te), benleonardite (Ag-8(Sb,As)Te2S3) and native tellurium inclusions. Gold is present as small, <20-mu m electrum inclusions in pyrite or, rarely, arsenopyrite, but is mainly intergrown with galena to form local cements to shattered pyrite. Rarely, coarse-grained gold, up to millimetres in diameter, is present. Alteration of the primary veins is extensive and limonite-dominated gossans carry electrum infilling small, <20-mu m, vugs or thin, ca 1 mu m, wide fractures. Placer gold grains from Calliachar Burn show gold-rich rims but core compositions that overlap with those obtained from electrum present in the sulphide and gossanous ores. Gold is present in small amounts in four veins at Urlar Burn. These comprise quartz-galena-chalcopyrite +/- pyrite +/- base-metal sulphides +/- CoNiFe arsenides and sulpharsenides. Although much of the primary mineralogy is similar to Calliachar, especially the western veins, there are significant differences in the amount and the mineralogy of Sb-, Te-, Bi- and Hg-bearing phases. Fluid inclusion data suggest that the mineralization took place over the range 320-140 degrees C from fluids containing significant CO2 and 2-13 wt% equiv. NaCl. Isotopic and noble gas studies indicate a magmatic (mantle-derived) source for the fluids with input from meteoric water. The mineralization appears to have been initiated by mantle-derived fluids, generated during the late Caledonian and focused by the Urlar Burn fault. The mineralization shares many characteristics with the Tyndrum-Cononish vein system, 45 km to the east, and Curraghinalt in Northern Ireland." @default.
