- W181115404 abstract "The effect of both growth rate and growth phase on the resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to ultraviolet irradiation damage was examined. With a decrease in growth rate there was an increase in UV-absorbing pigments (both pyocyanin and pyoverdine) and in resistance. It was also established, using batch culture, that resistance to UV irradiation was greatest in the stationary phase (by a three-log difference compared with log phase). The influence of pigment production was further examined and the two pigments, pyocyanin and pyoverdine, were found to provide physical protection for the cell. Pyocyanin also appeared to induce a resistant mechanism within cells. Increased pyocyanin levels resulted in increased radiation resistance. Since pigmented pseudomonads are common water and food spoilage organisms, these findings have implications for the efficacy of UV irradiation based treatment used in the control of these microorganisms." @default.
