- W1813308869 abstract "The purpose of the study was to present a case series reporting the clinical presentation, evaluation, and management of seven adolescent girls with symptomatic vaginal septa who were treated in the Division of Pediatric-Adolescent Gynecology and Reconstructive Surgery of the 2nd Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Athens, Aretaieion Hospital, from September 1997 to June 2000. The patients were divided in two groups depending on the type of vaginal septum. Group A consisted of three patients with transverse vaginal septum, all with hematometra, endometriosis, and congenital abnormalities of the urinary tract. One patient had a bicornuate uterus. Group B consisted of four patients with oblique vaginal septum, three with hematometra and congenital abnormalities of the urinary tract, all with endometriosis, two with didelphys uterus, and one with a bicornuate uterus. The patients of both groups underwent total excision of the septum followed by the administration of GnRH analogues for 6 months postoperatively. The follow-up of the patients varied from 3 to 34 months and has been entirely satisfactory (no recurrence of the symptoms, complete anatomic patency of the genital tract). In conclusion, total excision should be the treatment of choice for symptomatic vaginal septa to alleviate the symptoms and to minimize future reproductive problems by eliminating the long-term effects of retrograde menstruation." @default.
