- W1814677712 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter described the methods for the transfer of retinol from retinol-binding protein complex to liposomes and across liposomal membranes. To study transfer of retinol across liposomal membranes, the ability of horse liver alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) to oxidize retinol has been used. Because retinol is not a very good substrate for ADH, it is important to ensure that there are no competing substrates present. Therefore, ADH without ethanol and lactate dehydrogenase without glycerol should be used. Retinol transfer from the retinol-binding protein complex to liposomes is a relatively rapid process that is essentially completed in 30 min. The fact that retinol transfers rapidly between retinol-binding protein (RBP) and phospholipid membranes and across such membranes does not mean that this is necessarily so in vivo . The extent and the rate at which these transfers occur may be different in vivo , but not necessarily less or slower. There seems to be some dependence of the affinity of a lipophilic compound for a membrane on the lipid composition of the membrane. The protein content of the membrane seems to promote partitioning into the membrane. Thus, retinol transfer processes may be more pronounced and more rapid in vivo than in vitro ." @default.
