- W181502019 abstract "Because of the difficulties commonly encountered in evaluating the anticoagulant effect of heparin at the bedside and in determining appropriate dosage schedules for its administration, we have been studying the rate of heparin’s disappearance from blood. However it is measured, the half-life of heparin is about 1.5 hr (4). This suggests that giving the drug by intermittent intravenous injection every 4–6 hr, as is usual, does not ensure a sustained degree of anticoagulation, even when the dose is adjusted by, say, the Lee- White clotting time. Furthermore, in most reports of excessive bleeding after administration of heparin, the patients1 body weights have not been taken into account in reporting the dose of drug admin istered (9,15), so that the possibility of having administered an anticoagulating overdose of heparin can have been overlooked (3, 6)." @default.
