- W181700931 abstract "Introduction In September 2008 Mike Bamford, Bryan Gibbons and Blessings Sineta took us to a site of brick ruins along the Shire just south of the Mwampanzi River.1 What follows is my assessment of whether the site could be the African Lakes Corporation's (ALC) station at Katunga. Chief Katunga is a descendent of one of the Kololo servants who came up with Livingstone exactly 150 years ago in his search for the mythical lake which was the source of the Shire River (Clendennen 1992). The Kololo got fed up with Livingstone and established themselves as chiefs between the Ruo River and Kapichira Falls in the 1860s (Mandala 1977). In the early colonial period the Kololo proved themselves comparatively cooperative to the British efforts. It is therefore not surprising the ALC chose to establish its east bank station close to Katunga court.2 The chief could assist in the provision of security, food supplies and most importantly porters. In the 1890s the station worked relatively well, but at the turn of the century things changed for the worse. The level of the Shire dropped to such an extent that it was navigable to Katunga for only a few months during the rainy season. Great pressure was put on the local population as this is the time to work in the gardens while the ALC demanded porters, sometimes thousands at a time (Mandala 2006). The road that was constructed for transport by wagon brought only so much relief, particularly given its poor state during the rainy season.3 As a result, during this time of year, there was a frequent need to send for additional porters from Blantyre (see Bamford above). The porters from the Shire Highlands would of course have the same agricultural concerns as their colleagues in the valley. What is more, their labour was in high demand in the colonial plantation economy. The transport sector was putting an undue strain on the labour reservoir. It was in view of this labour demand that a railway was finally commissioned from Blantyre to Chiromo (Vail 1975). The falling water levels were a secondary concern. It did, however, cause the line to be extended to Port Herald (present-day Nsanje) (Baker 2007, 18). When the Blantyre (Limbe)-Port Herald railway line opened in 1908 the ALC Katunga station faced serious competition. This was however not its" @default.
