- W1817585669 abstract "The zeolite minerals of the natrolite g.roup (natrolite, tetranatrolite, paranatrolite, mesolite, scolecite, thomsonite, gonnardite, edingtonite, and tetraedingtonite) have the general formula (Na,Ca,Ba)r-,6(Al,Si)ooO8..nHrO. Electron microprobe and X-ray analyses were made of natrolite, tetranatrolite, gonnardite, and thomsonite from the Magnet Cove alkaline igneous complex, Arkansas, and of selected specimens from the U.S. National Museum. This information and data from the literature indicate that natrolite, mesolite, scolecite, edingtonite, and tetraedingtonits show only small deviations from the ideal stoichiometry. In contrast, gonnardite, tetranatrolite, and thomsonite show large deviations from the ideal end-member compositions and compose three crystalline series. These are (l) the gonnardite series given by ENa,u ,,Car,Al,u*Siro Oo.nHrO, where x varies from approximately 0.3 to 3.2 and tr denotes a cation vacancy in the intraframework channels, (2) the tetranatrolite series given by EoNa,u Ca,Al,u*Sira-Oro.l6HrO, where x varies from approximately 0.4 to 4, and (3) the thomsonite series given by EoNao*,Ca, ,A120-,Si20*O 8o.24H2O, where:c varies from approximately 0 to 2. The structures of the natrolite minerals are composed of chains of AlOo and SiOo tetrahedra that link in one of three ways to form the natrolite-, thomsonite-, or edingtonite-type frameworks. The intraframework channels are occupied by NaOo(HrO)2, (Na,Ca)Oo(HrO)r, CaOo(H,O)r, CaOo(HrO)r, (Na,Ca)Oo(HrO)0, or BaOu(H,O)o polyhedra. The Na-bearing polyhedra are edge linked to form continuous chains, whereas the Ca and Ba polyhedra are isolated from one another by channel vacancies. The structures of the natrolite minerals are defined by combining each of the three types of framework structures with various combinations of channel-occupying polyhedra. Various polysomatic series can be constructed by combining slices of two basic structures to form new hybrid structures. The compositional variation and complex crystallography of gonnardite can be explained if the gonnardite series is a pol'ysomatic series composed of mixed domains of natrolite and thomsonite. A paranatrolite series (troNa,._Ca*A1,6*Si24_,O8o.24HrO) is predicted, and it is proposed that the structure of paranatrolite combines the natrolite framework with channel-filling NaOo(HrO), and (Na,Ca)Oo(HrO)o polyhedra." @default.
