- W181824666 abstract "Biofuels are among the most attractive options for a renewable energy source. In addition to being renewable, biofuels also provide an advantage toward the reduction of GHG emissions because of CO2 sequestration by the growing biomass through photosynthesis. A biorefinery is a processing facility that converts biomass feedstocks into value-added products such as fuels and chemicals. This chapter appraises the designs of biorefineries. An effective design approach of biorefineries should involve the synthesis, integration, and screening of plausible alternatives. Given the enormous number of alternatives, it is crucial to have systematic methods for the quick synthesis and evaluation of candidate technologies and flow sheets. Research efforts included the computer-aided processing of routes prior to establishing the optimal product for optimal energy savings in the process. Optimization approaches have been used to develop and evaluate biorefinery configurations. The design procedure starts with the synthesis of configurations of interest using forward synthesis from the feedstocks and backward synthesis from the products and identifications of the chemical species associated with the forward and backward synthesis. More detailed analysis can then be dedicated to techno-economic analysis and the large-cost items, and integration opportunities should be sought to reduce the fixed and operating costs." @default.
