- W181851852 abstract "This paper describes plans to design, build and equip the Southeast regional radwaste incinerator in a rural area of Bladen County, North Carolina. Dry active waste, which will make up most of its intake, is expected to be reduced in waste volume by at least 96% on the average. This means that the equivalent of 28 bbl of DAW, or 210 ft, will be disposed of in slightly more than 7.5 ft of burial space. Thus, the burial site will last a lot longer than otherwise. A capital fund of $4-million has been allotted to design, build and equip the facility. At this time it is expected that there will be a total of 20 employees needed to initially run the facility. The current target date for completion and startup of the facility is the fall of 1986. The dual-combustion incinerator has proven itself in operation in a smaller installation at the University of Maryland, where it operates on an intermittent schedule. By eliminating the thermal stresses of cycling operation, performance of the unit should be at least as good as that of the smaller model and other commercial types used for nonradioactive materials." @default.
