- W181877355 abstract "The green alga Chlorogonium elongatum was cultivated continuously at 25° in the phauxostat under light limitation and N2 with acetate as sole carbon source. As irradiance was increased from 2 to 37 W/m2 the specific growth rate rose from 0.024 h−1 to 0.27 h−1 (6.48 d−1), mean cellular mass declined along with the content of protein and chlorophyll a + b, while mean cellular volume increased some 3.5-fold. RNA content increased up to a rate (μ) of 0.15 h−1, but DNA was nearly constant at 1.6 × 10−12 g/cell at all but the slowest growth rates. From μ = 0.052 h−1 to 0.15 h−1 acetate carbon was completely incorporated into biomass (Yacetate = 41–44 g per mole), but at μ = 0.27 h−1 some acetate was lost, probably due to oxidation. A four-fold increase of starch occurred with excess illumination. The fermentative metabolism of algae grown over the range μ = 0.084 h−1 to 0.27 h−1 was similar to that of batch-grown cells which produce ethanol, acetate and formate (1:1:2) and small amounts of CO2 and H2. At growth rates below 0.052 h−1, however, more CO2 and H2 and less acetate are produced. Continuous production of biomass due to photoheterotrophic assimilation of acetate is hence a feasible process, and further manipulation of cultural conditions seems to be a promising procedure for favorable modification of coupled algal fermentations." @default.
