- W18196646 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter deals with the signal transduction mechanisms for two categories of hormones—lipophilic hormones, hydrophilic peptide and amine hormones. The steroids, thyroxine, retinoids and vitamin D, which diffuse cells are lipophilic hormones. The hydrophilic peptide and amine hormones interact with receptors on the surface of cells. Hormones are secretes biochemical substances that affect cellular functions by altering rates of gene expression and metabolism. The “paracrine” hormones are also included along with the other hormones produced by endocrine glands. Ligand-activated nuclear receptors, orphan receptors and invertebrate receptor genes are discussed under nuclear receptor gene superfamily. The nuclear receptor undergoes a transformative change that converts it to an active transcription factor. Hydrophilic protein and amine hormones interact with receptors that are integral membrane proteins. . Hydrophilic protein and amine hormones interact with receptors that are integral membrane proteins. The basic principles of signal transduction from the plasma membrane during cellular actions of protein and amine hormones via plasma membrane receptors from the plasma membrane are discussed.. Signalling through heptahelical membrane receptors, heptahelical membrane receptors tyrosine phosphorylation, hormone receptors that are serine/threonine kinases, protein tyrosine phosphatases are discussed. Physiological integration of signal transduction is vital to normal physiology and defects in signalling are common characteristics of diseased states." @default.
