- W1827187427 abstract "This chapter describes Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). The Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) represents one end of the spectrum of the alcohol-related birth defects and neurodevelopmental abnormalities, which is encompassed by FASD. FAS occurs in children born to women who drink heavily during pregnancy. Children with this disorder have a characteristic pattern of minor facial anomalies, growth deficiency, and evidence of neurodevelopmental effects. Due to a variety of impediments to identifying all children with this condition, the true prevalence of FAS and FASD is not known. However, current estimates suggest that 0.5–2 per 1000 children born in the United States have the full-blown syndrome. The neurobehavioral consequences of FAS are the most frequent debilitating feature of the disorder. FAS is considered the leading known cause of mental retardation in the Western world. Approximately 10 times as many children are estimated to be affected with cognitive and/or behavioral impairments as a consequence of prenatal alcohol exposure. This disorder is completely preventable through the avoidance of alcohol by women who are pregnant." @default.
