- W1828542002 abstract "The effect of oxygen adsorbing ad-atoms on CO oxidation was examined on a Rh and Ir electrode. As predicted by the bi-functional theory of a binary electrocatalyst, the activity of these electrodes is extremely enhanced by these ad-atoms (by the same magnitude as that of the Pt electrode). The enhancement effect is not dependent on the substrate electrode, but dependent on these ad-atoms, i.e. their oxygen adsorbing property. The enhancement is in the order Sn ⩾ Ge (> Pb) for the IVth group and As > Sb (> Bi) for the Vth group, where the Pb and Bi ad-atoms, having almost no oxygen adsorbing property, exhibit very small effects. The following conclusion were drawn: (i) the primary factor in this type of enhancement is the onset potential of oxygen adsorption by these ad-atoms; (ii) the secondary factor is the rate of the adsorption of oxygen by the ad-atoms or that of the surface reaction between the oxygen and CO adsorbed by the substrate sites; (iii) the varieties of substrate electrode affect only the enhancement via the differences in the stability of these ad-atoms on the substrate in the positive potential region." @default.
